In December 1888, Vincent van Gogh cut off most of his left outer ear. Contemporary accounts differ on the exact extent of the injury, but a letter and drawing by his doctor Félix Rey, discussed by later researchers, indicate that nearly the whole outer ear was removed, not just the earlobe.
