Orbital debris can move faster than a bullet
Thousands of satellites around Earth support communications, navigation, weather monitoring, and science. Alongside them are retired spacecraft, rocket stages, and fragments. In low Earth orbit, objects travel at roughly 7–8 km/s; debris impacts average about 10 km/s. Even a small fragment can damage a spacecraft.
Orbits and debris are shown schematically; this is not a scale map.
