Roosevelt and Twain’s words
Two separate stories have been combined here. In 1909 Mark Twain wrote an unpublished manuscript calling President Theodore Roosevelt a “ruffian” and “bully” after reports of Roosevelt’s altercation with a 15-year-old rider in Rock Creek Park. Twain’s manuscript does not use the word “psychopath.” Separately, biographer Edmund Morris describes Roosevelt shooting at twigs and stumps while riding in the park; this is a biographer’s account, not part of the girl’s altercation.
