A little wonder, every day

Ukrainian cinema at international festivals

Festival firsts depend on whom a film represented.

The Encyclopedia of Ukraine identifies Yuri Illienko’s Swan Lake: The Zone (1990) as the first film to represent Ukraine, rather than the USSR, at an international film festival. It screened in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight and received a FIPRESCI prize. Oles Sanin’s Mamay later entered Molodist’s 2003 official selection, but it was not the first such film.
