Ейфелеву вежу збудували для Всесвітньої виставки в Парижі 1889 року, присвяченої 100-річчю Французької революції. Спершу її планували розібрати через 20 років. Щоб зберегти споруду, Гюстав Ейфель розвивав її наукове застосування: на вежі проводили метеорологічні й фізичні досліди, а згодом вона стала важливою радіоантеною. Її стратегічна користь допомогла Парижу поновити концесію, тобто дозвіл на її існування, на початку 1910 року.
