Is space really silent?
In the near-vacuum of open space, ordinary sound does not propagate: mechanical sound waves need a medium such as air, liquid, solid material, or sufficiently dense plasma. Astronauts hear one another through air inside a spacecraft and use radio while spacewalking. Instruments can detect electromagnetic or plasma waves and convert the data into audio; that is not sound traveling through the vacuum to a listener’s ear.
Sound does not cross a vacuum, though wave data can be sonified.
