*Snow Crash*: avatars and the Metaverse
Символічна AI-обкладинка: екран старого комп’ютера показує дротове віртуальне місто й узагальнений цифровий аватар; це не документальне зображення й не сцена з конкретної гри. / Symbolic AI-generated cover: an old computer screen shows a wireframe virtual city and a generic digital avatar; this is not documentary imagery or a scene from a specific game.
Neal Stephenson’s 1992 novel *Snow Crash* depicts the Metaverse, a networked virtual world where people interact through digital representations called avatars. The novel became an influential reference point for ideas about shared online worlds and helped popularize “avatar” for a person’s digital representation. It did not invent the word, however: it was already used in digital environments before the book appeared.
