Neal Stephenson’s 1992 novel *Snow Crash* depicts the Metaverse, a networked virtual world where people interact through digital representations called avatars. The novel became an influential reference point for ideas about shared online worlds and helped popularize “avatar” for a person’s digital representation. It did not invent the word, however: it was already used in digital environments before the book appeared.
