Lightning and nitrogen
Lightning converts some atmospheric nitrogen into reactive nitrogen compounds. A recent review estimates global lightning production of nitrogen oxides at about 5 ± 2 million tonnes of nitrogen per year; older estimates had a broad range reaching 10 million tonnes or more. Thus, “over 10 million” is not the best current central estimate.
