Digestion starts in the mouth and continues in the stomach; the small intestine completes nutrient breakdown with intestinal and pancreatic juices and bile. Most nutrient absorption occurs there. Life after total stomach removal is possible, but requires dietary adaptation and medical follow-up; deficiencies including vitamin B12 can occur. This does not make the stomach unnecessary or guarantee a particular lifespan.
