How many people have never seen snow?

It is often repeated that more than half of people have never seen snow, but no reliable global survey or demographic calculation supporting that number was found. Snowfall is concentrated mostly in the Northern Hemisphere, yet snow-cover maps cannot tell whether someone has traveled or seen snow in person. Treat the claim as an interesting guess, not verified statistics.
