Independent Ukraine first submitted a film for the Academy Award’s international category in 1997: it was A Friend of the Deceased by Viacheslav Kryshtofovych. The film was not nominated. Earlier films made in Ukraine during the Soviet era could represent the USSR; that is different from a submission by Ukraine.
