In early 2012, journalists reported that one of Paul Cézanne’s Card Players paintings had been sold to Qatar in 2011 for more than $250 million. Reporter Alexandra Peers explained in an NPR interview that details of the private transaction had emerged after a delay. The amount should therefore be described as press-reported, rather than an openly recorded auction hammer price.

The Card Players is a series of five canvases, not the title of a unique object. Cézanne depicted Provençal workers at an ordinary game, giving them monumental concentration. The series’ importance helps explain interest in an individual canvas, but its museum versions are not the same object as the one in the sale report.
