A 2014 study found unusual spatial organization among five chicken-retina cone types. Locally they do not form a crystalline lattice, yet large-scale density fluctuations are suppressed: disordered hyperuniformity. This describes a statistical cell distribution, rather than a simple rule that identical cells are never neighbors.
