The barreleye's transparent dome
The deep-sea fish Macropinna microstoma has a transparent, fluid-filled dome over its eyes. Its tubular eyes usually point upward to detect prey silhouettes, but can rotate forward while feeding. This helps it hunt in low light; the deep-sea darkness does not mean it sees equally well in every direction. [1–3]
