The international fusion experiment ITER is being built near Cadarache in southern France. Its target plasma temperature is about 150 million degrees Celsius, roughly ten times the temperature at the Sun’s core. This is a future experimental target, rather than an operating condition already achieved by ITER. The facility will study controlled fusion and will not generate electricity for the grid. Different cost estimates cannot simply be mixed: they depend on the period, currency and which contributions and expenses are counted.
