BBC Culture’s 2019 poll gathered choices from 368 experts and produced a list of 100 films directed by women. It includes five works by filmmakers with different ties to Ukraine: one by Larisa Shepitko, two by Kira Muratova, and two by Kyiv-born Maya Deren, known as an American avant-garde filmmaker. This count reflects the directors’ biographies and careers; it does not mean all five films were Ukrainian productions.
