Mendeleev and Bookbinding

Mendeleev knew bookbinding and cardboard work; recollections also associate his leisure with making frames and travel goods. The familiar nickname “master of suitcase-making” comes from an anecdotal retelling. The Mendeleev Museum-Archive at St Petersburg University cautions that stories about his suitcases as authenticated works are not supported by museum objects.
