Stanisław Lem’s novel *Astronauci* (*The Astronauts*) was published as a book in 1951 and became widely known, including through numerous editions abroad. Later, Lem wrote that he considered his early science-fiction novels to have little value, even though they had brought him international recognition. He explained that *The Astronauts* had to follow the patterns of socialist realism in communist Poland at the time.
