Stalactites, Stalagmites, and Climate Archives

In many limestone caves, water seeping through rock deposits minerals: stalactites hang from ceilings, while stalagmites grow from the floor beneath drips. These formations can develop very slowly. Their layers and chemistry preserve evidence about past rainfall and environmental conditions, though scientists interpret them in the context of each cave’s local geology.
