Stars and grains of sand
The popular comparison has some basis, but it is not an exact count: NASA cites an estimate that the Universe may contain more than ten stars for every grain of sand on Earth. Both totals are inferred indirectly—the stars in the observable Universe and sand on beaches—and depend on what is included. It is an illustrative comparison of orders of magnitude, not a census of every star and every grain on the planet.
Star and sand totals are estimates of enormous quantities.
