Researchers identified chemical evidence of grape wine in Neolithic vessels from Georgia dated to about 6000–5800 BCE. This establishes very early grape use for winemaking, roughly eight thousand years ago. Beverage residues do not establish the precise moment of vine domestication or prove that grapes were the first cultivated plant. Archaeological evidence of use and genetic reconstruction of domestication address different questions.
