Iceland — “ice land” and Europe’s second-largest island
The name Ísland literally means “ice land.” The medieval *Landnámabók* explains it with a story about Hrafna-Flóki seeing a frozen fjord; this is a later written account of the naming, not an independently verified record of the event. Iceland covers about 103,592 km² and is Europe’s second-largest island after Great Britain.
