Scarlett Johansson started earlier than seven

When did Scarlett Johansson start performing? She has recalled beginning to audition at about age seven. Her professional stage debut came around age eight in the off-Broadway play *Sophistry*, and her first film role was in *North* (1994), also when she was about eight. She also auditioned for commercials, but the earliest confirmed roles should not be summarized simply as “commercials and theater” without qualification: sources describe her very first jobs differently.
