In 1984, the Soviet Union developed a prototype handheld “laser pistol” for cosmonauts. It produced a brief, intense flash using a pyrotechnic lamp; the idea was to temporarily disrupt vision or sensitive optical equipment during an orbital emergency. It was a prototype that, according to available accounts, never flew in space.
