The Lateran Treaty established Vatican City State
On 11 February 1929, the Holy See and Italy signed the Lateran Treaty. It recognized the sovereignty of the Holy See over the new Vatican City State and settled the “Roman Question.” The treaty entered into force after ratification on 7 June 1929. More precisely, the treaty established the modern Vatican City State; it did not create the Holy See itself.
