Чому «вандалізм» пов’язаний із пограбуванням Рима?
The Vandals did sack Rome in 455. But the word *vandalism* did not arise then: Henri Grégoire introduced the French term in 1794 while condemning the destruction of art and monuments during the French Revolution. The ancient ethnonym became associated with the destruction of cultural property through the Vandals’ negative reputation in European historical tradition.
So 455 is a historical reference behind the word, not the date when the word appeared. Modern usage covers the deliberate damage or destruction of property or cultural objects; “senseless” is not a required part of the definition.
