Cultivated pineapple has low fertility, but breeders can obtain seeds by crossing it with closely related wild varieties. In controlled experiments, hand-pollinating pineapple with *Ananas comosus* var. *ananassoides* produced viable seeds and fertile offspring. Cultivated pineapple is therefore not completely infertile, although such crosses require compatible plants and controlled pollination.
