Why Waves Glow at Night
When coastal water flashes blue in response to waves, a boat wake, or touch, bioluminescent dinoflagellates are one common cause. Mechanical disturbance activates a cellular pathway: the molecule luciferin is oxidized with the help of the enzyme luciferase, producing light. But dinoflagellates are not responsible for every glowing sea; other marine organisms can emit light too.
