How many "brains" does an octopus have?
An octopus has one central brain and a highly developed nervous system in its arms. The popular phrase “nine brains” counts the central brain plus one for each of the eight arms, but this is a metaphor: the arms contain nerve cords and ganglia, not eight separate brains.
