A narwhal’s tusk is not a horn but an elongated canine tooth that grows through the upper lip. In males, it usually develops from the left upper-jaw tooth and can reach about 3 metres. Research has also found a sensory response to different water salinities, although all of the tusk’s functions are still being studied.
