Malevich’s birth in Kyiv

Kazimir Malevich was born in Kyiv on 23 February 1879 (11 February in the Julian calendar). His parents, Severyn and Liudwika Malevich, were Catholics of Polish origin; the family moved frequently because his father worked at sugar factories. The identification of a specific homestead on Zhylianska Street comes from later biographical reconstructions, and the reported number of siblings varies depending on whether sources count all births or only those who reached adulthood.
