During courtship, a male Pisaura mirabilis spider offers a female prey wrapped in silk. Sometimes he becomes motionless while holding the gift, then starts moving again and continues mating; in studies, this behavior was associated with a higher likelihood of copulation. It was once explained as protection from a female’s attack or cannibalism, but experiments point more strongly to helping the male overcome female resistance. This has been observed in one particular species and should not be generalized to all spiders.
