Джуді Гарленд і студійна дієта

MGM did monitor 16-year-old Judy Garland’s weight and food while she worked on *The Wizard of Oz*; biographies also describe the studio system’s use of stimulants and sleeping pills for young performers. But the popular, specific story that her menu consisted only of chicken soup, black coffee, and many cigarettes is not securely substantiated. Film historians Jay Scarfone and William Stillman disputed the cigarette account, noting that Garland was a nonsmoker. Thus, pressure over weight and medication has historical support, while “soup, coffee, and lots of cigarettes” should be described as disputed and likely exaggerated, not established fact.
