Napoleon and cinema

Napoleon Bonaparte has appeared on screen since cinema’s earliest years: the Lumière brothers made one of the first films about him in 1897. Scholars describe more than a thousand films about the Napoleonic era, with Napoleon himself appearing as a character in about 300. The distinction matters: a film about his era does not necessarily show the emperor.
