Brain signals vs phones: a shaky comparison

Popular materials sometimes claim that the brain “generates more impulses in a day than all phones in the world.” But the comparison is not clearly defined: what counts as an electrical impulse in a phone, how is that compared with a neuronal action potential, and how many events are counted over a day? Without a common method, this is not a verified quantitative claim.

Neurons do communicate through electrical action potentials and chemical signaling at synapses. That mechanism is remarkable without an unsupported phone comparison.
