Christ derives from Greek christos, Anointed One, corresponding to the Hebrew title Messiah. John’s Gospel explicitly explains this relationship. It is a religious title rather than Jesus’ ordinary family surname. The word’s meaning should be distinguished from the belief that Jesus is the Messiah.
