Life Beside Black Smokers
On the ocean floor, hot, mineral-rich water flows through hydrothermal openings. When it meets cold seawater, minerals form dark, smoke-like plumes. Microorganisms around these vents obtain energy from chemical reactions and support a food web without photosynthesis.
