Pierre-Auguste Renoir did not make or repair shoes: at 13, he became an apprentice porcelain painter at the Paris workshop of Lévy-Frères. The confusion may come from his father, who was a tailor. Renoir decorated porcelain objects until 1858 and later pursued painting.
