How elephants use low-frequency signals
Elephants communicate with low-frequency calls, some below the range of human hearing. Under suitable conditions, these sounds can travel long distances, sometimes several kilometers. Research also indicates that calls and foot stomps can generate seismic waves in the ground, which elephants may detect through their feet; the trunk’s role as a vibration sensor is still being studied.
