The Flask That Inspired Safety Glass
In 1903, French chemist Édouard Bénédictus noticed that a dropped glass flask cracked but its fragments stayed in place, held by a thin cellulose-nitrate film left inside it. The accident suggested the principle behind Triplex laminated glass: a transparent polymer layer holds fragments together when the glass breaks. Bénédictus filed his patent in 1909.
