Where moonlight comes from

The Moon does not make its own visible light: what we see is sunlight reflected from its surface. Light takes about 1.28 seconds on average to travel from the Moon to Earth, so “1.25 seconds” is a close rounded estimate, not a constant, because the lunar distance varies. Sunlight first takes about 8 minutes 20 seconds to reach the Moon from the Sun.

Moonlight is reflected sunlight.
