The fish is known as an early Christian symbol, without establishing a universal first-ever sign. Greek ichthys was associated with an acrostic whose initials conveyed a confession of Jesus Christ, God’s Son and Savior. Early inscriptions also used anchors and other imagery. An object’s symbolism requires historical context.
