For adults reading silently in English, research estimates an average rate of about 238 words per minute for nonfiction and 260 for fiction. A review of research gives a broader typical range of 200–400 words per minute for educated adult readers. These are guides, not a speed for every person; the time needed for a 300-page book depends on its words per page, the text, and the purpose of reading, so page count alone cannot give an exact estimate.
