Human adrenal glands can shrink rapidly after birth as much of the fetal cortical zone disappears. This is an early developmental phase, rather than continuous gland shrinkage throughout life. Cortical tissues subsequently differentiate and remodel. Gland size and the size of its individual zones must be interpreted in relation to age and measurement method.
