Two biographies of Michelangelo appeared during his lifetime: Giorgio Vasari included an account of him in the 1550 *Lives*, and in 1553 the artist commissioned Ascanio Condivi to write a separate biography, supplying information himself. The source-list claim that he was the “first artist” is too broad; what the evidence supports is the unusual attention paid to Michelangelo while he was still alive.
