American alligators can endure short periods of severe cold when a water body freezes. As ice begins to form, an alligator may submerge its body while keeping its nostrils above the surface to breathe; ice can sometimes form around the snout and hold it above water temporarily. This is a behavior under particular conditions, not proof that cold cannot harm alligators: they may remain trapped in ice until a thaw.
