The expanding universe

On large cosmological scales, space expands and the average distances between galaxies increase. Observations show that distant galaxies generally have redshifts, and the relation between distance and cosmological recession is described by the Hubble–Lemaître law. This does not mean every pair of galaxies always moves apart: gravitationally bound systems, such as galaxies within clusters, can approach one another.

On large scales, expanding space increases distances between galaxies.
