A little wonder, every day

Why “the first computer” needs a qualifier

Історичне фото Colossus воєнного часу; не сучасна музейна реконструкція / Historical wartime photograph of Colossus; not the modern museum reconstruction.
Історичне фото ENIAC, армія США / Historical U.S. Army photograph of ENIAC; original machine rather than a modern replica.

Early electronic digital computing machines became operational in the 1940s, but “the first computer” depends on the criteria. Britain’s Colossus was working at Bletchley Park in early 1944 as a programmable electronic machine specialized for cryptanalysis. The American ENIAC, publicly unveiled in February 1946, was a general-purpose machine. Electronic, programmable, general-purpose and stored-program are therefore not interchangeable categories of priority.
