Tides and ocean waves

High and low tides are driven mainly by the Moon’s differential gravitational pull across Earth; the Sun contributes too, while Earth’s rotation carries coastlines through the tidal bulges. When the Sun, Earth, and Moon nearly line up, their effects reinforce one another and the tidal range grows. Ordinary surface waves are a different phenomenon and are mostly generated by wind.

The Moon and Sun drive tides; wind creates most surface waves.
